The first hour
- Call your own numberFrom someone else's phone or through a messenger. If the phone is nearby it will be heard; if someone picked it up, an honest person will answer.
- See where the device isFind Hub (formerly Find My Device) on Android, Find My on Apple. There you can also play a sound, show a message with your contact on the screen and lock the device.
- Lock the screen and payments; the SIM laterLock the screen through the finding service and payments through the bank: a phone can confirm a transfer and reset passwords. Block the SIM card with the operator only after you have used the finding service, or at once if the phone was definitely stolen: without a SIM it will not report its location away from Wi-Fi. Earbuds and laptops do not need this step.
- Post a noticeOn DeRechi and in local groups: model, colour, case, place. Do not post the IMEI or the serial number, but keep them for the police.
Where to look
- Where the device was last seen on the map in Find Hub or Find My.
- The venue or the transport: phones are left with the manager or the driver.
- The carrier's lost property office: on public transport devices are collected centrally.
- DeRechi and local groups: search by model and colour.
Put a message with another number on the lock screen. Whoever finds the phone will not have to guess how to reach you.
If the phone is not coming back
If the phone had no screen lock or was stolen, change the passwords for email, banking and messengers at once. Otherwise do it after a day or two without a sign of the device: sign out of all sessions on every device and, if needed, erase the phone remotely (after erasing, a phone usually can no longer be tracked). If it was stolen, report it to the police with the IMEI (it is on the box, on the receipt and in the device list of your Google or Apple account): insurance needs that too.A message saying “your iPhone has been found, follow the link to see its location” is a scam aimed at your Apple ID or Google password. Check the location only in the official app.
Found someone's phone?
- Do not try to unlock itLeave it switched on and wait for a call. The lock screen often shows the owner's contact or a message from them.
- Answer the calls, or make one yourselfThe owner will almost certainly call. If the screen is not locked, call one of the recent contacts and say where the phone is.
- Hand it to the police or the manager, and post a noticeOn DeRechi describe the model, the colour and the case. The owner will prove the phone is theirs by naming the number or the wallpaper.
